From the History of the Institute
Smirnov Scientific Research Institute in Mathematics and Mechanics was founded 3 May 1932 according to the decree of the Counsil of the Folk Comissars. A.R. Kulisher became the institutes first director. The institute consisted of two departments: the Mathematidal Department with V.I. Smirnov as a leader, and the Mechanical Department leaded by E.L. Nikolai. In 1989 the institute was called after the academician V.I. Smirnov.
Nowadays the SRIMM is an organizing and financial base on which the institutes laboratories and the chairs of the Mathematical-Mechanical Faculty can lead their researches in the field of mathematics, mechanics and IT.
The main part of fundamental researches is being realized by the 16 laboratories. Each of them represent unique creative collectives with rich traditions.
The number of persons employed by the Institute on permanent contract is 142, among them Academy members Prof. N.F. Morozov and Prof. Ibragimov I.A., five correspondent members (V.A. Jacubovitsh, V.A. Pliss, Leonov G.A., Indeitsev D.A. and Petrov Ju.V.), 58 Sc. Doctors and 76 Ph. Doctors.
A number of the employees have got national rewards for their scientific activity. The institute hosts annual international and Russian scientific conferences.
